Spark plugs are a small part with a big impact on how your MX/off-road bike starts, idles, and pulls under load. The right plug helps prevent hard starting after a tip-over, misfires on long climbs, and that annoying bog when you crack the throttle out of a corner. Fresh, correctly spec’d plugs also support cleaner combustion, smoother low-end response, and more consistent power when you’re riding in deep sand, tight woods, or wide-open moto.
When choosing, start with exact fit and compatibility for your engine: thread diameter, reach, seat type, and the manufacturer’s heat range. Next, pick the plug type that matches your use—standard copper core vs longer-life iridium/platinum—plus whether you need a resistor plug to reduce electrical noise. Consider riding conditions: frequent stop-and-go, mud and water crossings, or sustained high RPM can shift what heat range works best. Finally, plan maintenance: if you do regular top-end service, keep a fresh plug on hand and inspect the cap and lead at the same time.
Common mistakes are running the wrong heat range, reusing a plug with a cracked insulator, or ignoring fouling caused by a rich map, worn rings, or excessive oil. Replace a plug when starting gets inconsistent, the bike breaks up under load, or the electrode is rounded and the color/soot shows ongoing tuning issues. Always check the gap, torque, and that the plug boot seals tight against water and dust.
Tip: After a wet ride, pull the plug cap, dry it, and add a light smear of dielectric grease to keep moisture from causing misfires.
