Gearbox oils are for protecting the transmission in MX/off-road bikes under high load, heat, and constant clutch work. The right oil helps prevent notchy shifting, false neutrals, and accelerated gear or bearing wear after hard motos, sand rides, or long enduro stages. A quality gearbox oil also keeps clutch feel consistent so you can focus on lines, not on hunting for the next gear.
Choose by your bike’s spec first: match the viscosity and API/GL rating recommended by the manufacturer, then pick the oil base (mineral, semi-synthetic, synthetic) to suit how hard you ride. For frequent races and high temperatures, a stable synthetic can hold its film strength longer; for casual trail riding, mineral or semi-synthetic may be enough with regular changes. Consider conditions too: mud and water crossings call for shorter intervals, and a heavily slipping clutch can benefit from an oil designed for wet-clutch compatibility.
Common mistakes are running the wrong viscosity (too thick in cold weather, too thin when hot) and stretching change intervals until shifting degrades. Replace the oil sooner if the bike starts shifting harsher, the oil comes out dark with a burnt smell, or you see excessive metallic sheen. During service, check the drain plug magnet and look for unusual debris that could signal clutch or gearbox wear.
Tip: After the first ride on fresh oil, re-check for leaks around the drain bolt and confirm the shift feel while the engine is fully warm.
