Engine guards are essential protection parts for MX/enduro/off-road motorcycles, built to shield the engine cases, water pump, ignition cover and lower frame rails from rocks, ruts and hard impacts. They help prevent cracked covers, oil leaks and costly DNFs when you tag a boulder in a river crossing or slide into a stump. A good guard also reduces wear from constant boot rub and keeps mud and debris from chewing up vulnerable edges during long, technical rides.
When choosing an engine guard, start with exact fit and compatibility for your bike model/year and any add-ons like skid plates, frame guards, oversized clutch covers or aftermarket footpegs. Pick the right construction: aluminum for strong impact resistance and easy cleaning, or composite/plastic for lighter weight and better slide over obstacles. Consider your terrain and pace—rocky enduro and hardpack demand stronger coverage, while faster MX may prioritize clearance and weight. Check mounting style and service access so you can still change oil, inspect the filter and clean around the water pump without fighting the hardware.
Common mistakes include buying a “universal” guard that interferes with the shifter or brake pedal, and ignoring loose bolts that let the guard vibrate and wear through. Replace or re-check the guard after big hits, deep gouges, bent brackets, or if you notice seepage, new engine noise, or contact with the exhaust.
Tip: After the first ride, re-torque the mounting bolts and add a drop of medium threadlocker—guards settle once the bike heats and cools.
