Bolts and nuts are the small hardware that keeps your MX/off-road bike tight, aligned, and safe—engine mounts, subframe, plastics, sprockets, brake components, skid plates, and body armor-style protection parts. The right fasteners stop annoying rattles, prevent parts from shifting after hard landings, and help you avoid stripped threads or lost bolts that can end a ride faster than a torn jersey or cracked goggles.
When choosing hardware, start with fit and compatibility: exact diameter, length, thread pitch, and head type (hex, flange, button) must match your model and the part you’re clamping. Pick the right material/type: high-tensile steel for critical load points, stainless for corrosion resistance, and lightweight alloy only where it’s appropriate and specified. Consider riding conditions—mud, frequent pressure washing, and winter storage demand better corrosion protection—and plan maintenance: use correct torque, washers, and threadlocker where needed, and keep spares in your tool pack.
Common mistakes are mixing thread pitches, reusing rounded or stretched bolts, and overtightening into aluminum, which strips cases and clamps. Replace fasteners after big impacts, if the head is damaged, threads feel gritty, or the bolt has visible necking. Check that nuts spin freely by hand before torquing, and inspect washers and spacers so your plastics and guards don’t crack from uneven load.
Tip: Clean threads, start by hand, then torque to spec—if it doesn’t thread smoothly, stop and verify pitch before you ruin the part.
